Kyla Matsuura-Miller

Kyla Matsuura-Miller, one of the stars of our first ever Yarragon Studio Festival

Since graduating from the Australian National Academy of Music (ANAM) in 2018, Freedman Fellowship winner Kyla Matsuura-Miller has more than established her place at the table in the Australian cultural scene as a violinist, educator and media personality.

Born in Tokyo but raised in Brisbane, Kyla studied violin at the Queensland Conservatorium under Michele Walsh before beginning her studies with Dr Robin Wilson at ANAM in Melbourne. She has received numerous prizes and scholarships, including the Gwen Nisbet Prize for most outstanding student at ANAM (2018), the Richard Pollett Memorial prize (2017), Grand Prize at MRC Great Romantics (2017), and has placed at both the Kendall National Violin Competition and Australian Youth Classical Music Competition.

Central to Kyla’s creative and professional work as a violinist lies her commitment to chamber music. Kyla was an Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra in 2017, and is a core member of Syzygy Ensemble, Inventi Ensemble and Duo Piaggio with her long-time collaborator and friend, pianist Adam McMillan.

2021 has also seen her television and radio debut as a contestant on the iconic Australian music quiz show, ABC’s Spicks and Specks, as well as featuring in various guest spots on radio programmes through ABC Classic FM.
